Building Sustainable Food Systems in the Heart of Oak Park Sacramento
Oak Park Eggery is a small-scale urban farm feeding Sacramento’s most vulnerable at their doorstep. Located in the heart of one of the city’s neediest food deserts, the project provides eggs and produce from directly within the community for free.
The program’s unique eco-centric model up-cycles food wast from kitchen scraps donated by the community and converts them into eggs which go directly back into the community. The excess food scarps and chicken manure go into the adjacent community garden which provides more food for the community and more scraps for the chickens and compost, leading to a continuous virtuous cycle.
We rescue food from community waste streams. This includes direct donation and community collaboration.
We up-cycle with Chickens! They eat the scraps, produce manure, and facilitate composting by turning the soil.
Chickens provide eggs while the fertilizer and compost goes into the community garden.
