Utilizing small scale animal husbandry and urban agriculture the Eggery is feeding people at their doorstep. The project provides fresh, organically grown, pesticide free food, while producing less carbon and using less water than a traditional agricultural operation; all while reducing landfill waste.
Because of its location in the heart of one of Sacramento’s food deserts, it cuts out the transportation of products from the countryside into urban areas for distribution at central markets. This reduces the carbon footprint and provides residents of this poor neighborhoods direct access to fresh eggs and produce.
“Arbor wast increases water retention and provides weed abatement while enriching the soil.”
Tanama Gardens consume less water by utilizing arbor waste as a soil insulator. This provides water retention, enriches the soil, and provides weed abatement. Additionally, companion planting beds with taller sun hardier species, like corn, with smaller less sun tolerant species, like strawberries, increase individual bed yield and provides more efficient water use.
“Community waste streams reduce landfills.”
Thanks to the Eggery’s steady supply of fresh compost and naturally nitrogen rich chicken manure, there is no need for artificial fertilizers. Additionally, the small scale and efficient planting of the urban garden allows for easy monitoring and natural intervention in the case of pests, eliminating the need for pesticides.
Because food waste is diverted directly from the community, rather than entering the city waste process, there is less chance it will end up in landfills. Food waste is deposited directly into the chicken pen where it is up-cycled into eggs, compost, and fertilizer.
Partnerships with community businesses who provide regular food scrap drop offs and individual neighbors who bring by their own kitchen scraps keeps the chickens fed and Tanama Community Garden fertilized.
We are proud of the transformation we have helped bring to this small part of our neighborhood and so grateful for the contributions of the community. We could have never done it without our friends and neighbors who gave of their precious time and resources to build this beautiful community project together.
Let’s keep growing together! Join us at our next community event.
